John Heath, England. President : 2011 - 2013

JHeathI was born in 1950 and grew up in the English midlands.  From as early as I can remember I was interested in human psychology, long before I knew the words for it.

My first degree was in psychology and philosophy.  I trained as a teacher and taught in both primary and secondary schools. I gained a Masters degree in Educational Psychology in 1975 and took up my first post as an Educational Psychologist.  I worked with young people from infancy to adulthood. I worked with their teachers, parents and a whole range of other child specialists.   I was interested in the way children develop the skills they need for independent living and it was very apparent to me that the ones who did best, at whatever intellectual level, were the ones with good social skills. It was during these years that I discovered TA and I used it with teachers as a way for them to examine their own motivations when interacting with children.   This is where my interest in training as an adult psychotherapist had its beginnings.

I began formal training in Transactional Analysis in 1988, though I had attended a number of workshops before that and knew the model well.   I started a private psychotherapy practice in the early 90's and shifted my other psychological work into the private sector so that I could be selective about what I did.  I developed a full time psychotherapy practice over the next five years, working with individuals, couples and groups.  I gained my CTA (psychotherapy) qualification in 1997 in Keele, England.  I have served in the UK as a Council Member of ITA, Chair of Professional Practice and Co-Chair of Ethics. I developed a training and supervision practice in the north west of England and qualified as TSTA in 2004 in Bangalore, India.  It was at that point that I became actively involved with the ITAA, first as Chair of Conference Committee, then as European Regional Representative, Vice President (Operations) and in 2010, as President.

I have worked as a TA trainer in Slovenia, Turkey and Romania as well as in the UK.  I have a particular interest in somatic process and work for one day each week in a local hospital offering psychotherapy to people with chronic pain.

As a psychological practitioner I am committed to the principles of the humanistic tradition.  I continue to be amazed by the intricacy of human functioning and the ways in which individuals achieve their particular coherence.  Psychological theory comes in many forms and I find inspiration in its complexity and diversity. I find coherence and integration of those many forms in Transactional Analysis.

Steff Oates, England. Secretary:2011-2014

Steff-OatesSteff Oates is a Teaching and Supervising Transactional Analyst based in the North West of England.  Her original training was as a primary school teacher, following which she worked with troubled children in residential care.  It was here that she first started to appreciate the benefit of a therapeutic relationship.

After completing her psychology degree she made a choice to train in Transactional Analysis valuing the breadth of approaches that the theory covers. Since qualifying as a CTA in 1997 Steff has attended a variety of trainings in body psychotherapy.   She integrates her learning in this area into her practice and teaching of Transactional Analysis always appreciating the robustness of TA theory when using it within and alongside other modalities.  In 2004, with three other colleagues, she co-founded the Northern College for Body Psychotherapy, which offers continuing professional development for experienced practitioners integrating the theory and practice of body psychotherapy with TA and other disciplines.

Steff trains at a variety of institutes in England, Scotland, Paris, Switzerland and Romania. She has seventeen years experience of serving TA organisations beginning as Editor of the ITA news, (The British newsletter recently renamed the Transactional Analyst), serving on the national training standards committee, serving as chair of this committee, then as chair of the national organisation.   She has also organized a number of national conferences and run workshops at the European conferences and the International Conferences.  Steff is an avid reader, enjoys writing and serves on the Editorial Board of the TAJ and of the Transactional Analyst.

Steff has been a committed member of the ITAA for around fifteen years and particularly enjoys the international conference with the thrill of being immersed in our global learning community.  She as been secretary to the ITAA BOT since March 2009, getting a real buzz through her work with colleagues on the BOT and reaching out to the world wide community
